An Introduction To Binaural Meditation

Binaural meditation is rapidly growing in popularity. With today’s busy lifestyle, setting aside time for spiritual development and mediation grows increasingly difficult. The use of binaural sounds helps produce results more quickly and accurately. It also doesn’t need any formal training - all you need to do is listen to a pre-recorded track on your headphones.

During the 1830s, a researcher discovered the curious occurrence of binaural beats. He revealed that if certain sounds that were very close, but slightly different, were played that the human mind would interpret a rolling, repeating beat. He also found that these sounds had a dramatic effect on a person’s state of mind. It was treated as a curiosity arousing only the interest of a select few until the late twentieth century when interest in the phenomena exploded.

Research has shown great benefits in using binaural rhythms for meditation. They help a listener reach a meditative state of mind in much less time. They also seem to assist the retention of the meditation mindset, including resisting outside distractions.

Just as they are effective for meditation, the beats are also ideal for lucid dreaming. Considered a form of sleeping meditation, lucid dreams are those where the dreamer is fully conscious and able to manipulate their dreaming state.

Binaural meditation and dreaming works through the effect that certain frequencies of light and sound have on the mind. Frequency is simple how fast the sound is vibrating. Higher frequencies indicate faster vibrations. The brain will begin to adjust its rhythms to match the speed of steadily repeating beats and flashes. This “brain rhythm” matches the activity and energy level of a person’s thoughts. High frequencies indicate a lot of active thinking, high stress, or even anxiety. Slower paced rhythms correlate with states of sleep and meditation.
