Learning To Meditate Is A Relaxing Process

Learning to meditate may seem like a daunting task, particularly in the face of so many preconceived ideas about this ancient form of relaxation. To many the idea of meditation is associated with sage-like wisdom and the ability to sit immobile in uncomfortable positions for endless hours. To many this goes hand in hand with fasting and other forms of self-denial.

This is most certainly not the case and anyone can meditate if they simply have the desire to do so. The first thing to do is to create an atmosphere conducive to relaxation and this begins by turning off the radio, the television, your cell phone and any other distractions. Ensure that you will not be disturbed for the duration.

Being physically comfortable is a big key to being able to meditate in the beginning. Dress in loose fitting clothing, make sure to eat and drink something beforehand, ensure that your room is at a comfortable temperature. Light a few candles, incense or place some essential oils in a burner to pleasantly scent the room.

Make yourself comfortable by relaxing in a position that will put you at your ease. You do not have to adopt the lotus position to be able to meditate. Reclining on a couch or being seated in a chair is perfectly fine so long as you can feel utterly relaxed.

Close your eyes and slowly become aware of your breath. Notice how it flows in and out of your lungs and become aware of the expansion and contraction of your lungs as you breathe. Start to visualize your breath as a circular cycle of air moving in and out of your body in one, smooth flowing motion.

Keep a constant motion going and try to empty your mind of all the days worries and lists of things that still need to be done. Simply focus on your breathing and become aware of your actual physical being. Are there tense spots in your body or aches and pains that require soothing? Simply breathe, visualizing your breath releasing any tension as you exhale.

The goal here is to simply quiet your mind, which can be a difficult task at first. If thoughts pop into your head, simply focus on clearing them away and focus again on your breathing. At first you may only be able to do this for a few seconds, or a minute or so, but persevere. The mind is like a wayward child and will rebel against being disciplined, but look, you are meditating already!
