Hypnosis - One Way To Quit Smoking
Posted on Friday, December 9th, 2011 at 6:34 pmThe world we live in today is different from yesterday. It seems that everything has changed drastically. If it’s for the better or for the worse, we really don’t know. What we know is that today is a world of temptations. There’s gambling, liquor, drugs, sedentary lifestyles and anything that’s considered undesirable enticing people, everywhere they go. The present environment has gone extremely “toxic” for youngsters too. Industrial and farm products are becoming dangerous to our health, yet people have no choice other than to patronize their products all the more. It’s a hard situation to re-balance, especially when so many millions of people are into it. Among all these modern perils or new variations of old dangers, smoking is the hardest to deal with for many people.
Addiction to smoking is not as easy to overcome as everyone says. Ask a person who has really struggled with it. It costs capital that is much-needed elsewhere, and supports directionless behavior. It predisposes those around you to weakened immune systems, and you can become a burden to your surroundings in a way you never thought possible. The biggest loss of all is your youth, which you will never regain in full. Nicotine stays in our systems far longer than any component of alcohol, and the effort required to break smoking’s stranglehold is every bit as fierce as fighting against heroine.
The “stop smoking” industry is enormous, but for many of us, mostly ineffective. For a large percentage of smokers, banishing cigarettes would be far more difficult than to stop drinking. Smoking has a powerful hold on us. One part of the industry devoted to breaking the smoking curse is, surprisingly, not mentioned all that often. Part of the reason is that the science/art of hypnosis is mired in too many cinematic representations and ancient legends. Modern citizens have an uneasy fear of it. They fear losing control as well, not realizing that smoking has already rendered them vulnerable and at least partially helpless. So, if you will brush aside all the visions of vampires staring into a victim’s eyes, or swinging pendulums, let’s rethink hypnosis for overcoming addiction, in a more modern, scientific manner.
Most doctors, including psychiatrists and psychologists, are fully armed with gadgetry, guilt trips and drugs to force you to stop smoking. Their track record is poor, especially in the use of guilt. Rational explanations and warnings are not much better, as addictions are not based on rational logic. They are “irrational” behaviors. For many professionals, hypnosis is the reasonable alternative. Patients give it high marks, and old public misconceptions are gradually being left behind.
If you are a smoker with a background in hypnosis, you are fortunate. You’ve learned to quiet the inner turbulence on which addictions depend. You are familiar with the sensations involved in self-suggestion. You know that practice makes perfect, so get to it.
If, by chance, you’ve already learned how to hypnotize yourself, congratulations, and if you’re a smoker with a background in hypnosis, then you’re doubly lucky. Hypnotizing yourself for the purpose of relaxation is almost identical to the process of hypnotizing yourself to stop smoking. The only difference is a self-suggestion that is more specific than the normal, diffused sense of relaxation. Repeating the process each day for a half hour to an hour is plenty of time. You should feel the changes within body and mind before a few hours go by, if you really are proficient.
As a rule, the most successful examples of self-hypnosis are attained with the expertise of certified hypnotists. They know how to guide clients through the entire process. However, if you’re not into it, don’t try it. A huge part of the hypnosis process entails trust and belief. If you are into it, take the time to educate yourself with the best courses from experts from a wide area of education.
