I Slept In Michael Franti’s Bed

Posted on Thursday, November 24th, 2011 at 3:43 pm

If you dig the vibe and music of Michael Franti & Spearhead, listen up. I’ve been a Franti fan since Everyone Deserves Music in 2003, and it’s no cheap thrill when I check into his new, green Soulshine Bali yoga retreat near the upcountry artist community of Ubud, in Bali, Indonesia.

Franti’s “villa, retreat oasis and cafe” is edged by rice terraces and coconut palms along the Agung river. It’s an oasis indeed after the touristy bustle of Ubud, world famous now that Julia Roberts starred in the film Eat Pray Love. Busloads of wide-eyed visitors arrive each day.

The moment I arrive I am given a cool glass of coconut water. Ahhhh, totally refreshing. I quickly find a vinyasa flow yoga class that’s starting up in the a large open-air studio, and join in. Afterwards, I dip into the infinity pool before enjoying an organic salad with housemade muesli and organic local coffee, rich and dark. After that, I’m totally in the groove and the hours just seem to slip away.

To cap the day, I try a Taoist meditation class, then amble slowly to my room. It’s called the Sunset Room for good reason, and I watch the last of the fiery sky disappear. This happens to be the room where Michael sleeps when he’s in residence. I look for clues to the man. Carvings on the furnishings and wall ornaments indicate he’s hot for geckos.

Soulshine is the result of a longtime partnership between Franti and Carla Swanson. After filming and editing many of Michael’s music videos and his pro-peace documentary I Know I’m Not Alone, Swanson turned her creativity to the creation of this retreat. It can sleep up to 26 people, with grounds that include tropical gardens and ornate ponds. As a guest, you are welcome to pluck fresh organic goodness from an abundance of mango, jackfruit, banana, mangostein, rambutan, and more.

The retreat was built using reclaimed wood for decking and other green building techniques. The cafe takes full advantage of the bounty from its own organic garden and other local organic farms. Bed linens are organic cotton.

In addition to providing jobs for local Balinese, the retreat helps to support a local holistic school and the Bumi Sehat Natural Birthing Clinic (the mortality rate of mothers and newborns is shockingly high in Indonesia).

My advice to the Bali-bound: don’t miss this experience, even if you’ve never heard a Franti song in your life. You’ll want to afterwards, I promise.

Relaxing Music May Help You Heal

Posted on Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at 6:48 am

Music hath charms. . Yes music can heal you. Your heart. Your soul. Your mind. It relaxes you and will take you to places that make the world seem so far away. Put on an album or the radio and tune into a song that is soft and soothing. Before you know it your troubles or concerns are a thing of the past.

The most broad example of a soothing type of music would be soft music. This would include songs and pieces that utilize gentler sounding instruments like strings, flute, harp and acoustic guitar. Soft music, as the name would imply, would not be played at a high volume as this would disrupt a soft and relaxing environment. A lot of classical music, especially from the 18th and 19th centuries would be ideal soft music. Also, music by artists like Enya, Yanni and Vangelis are generally soft and atmospheric in nature.

Similarly, soft rock music can also lift your spirits and inspire you. When you feel at ease, inspired and more relaxed, your mind may be dwelling less on discomfort and the fact of your illness, allowing your body to rest and recover more quickly.

Pop music, such as Lady Gaga or Christina Aguilera, can tap into our emotions and change our outlook and mood more quickly and efficiently than other methods. Studies support that pop music, amongst other genres, can help people suffering from mental illness by alleviating stress, panic and feelings of isolation.

The practice of yoga is often enhanced by the playing of soft, calming music in the background. Because yoga is focused on cleansing the mind and focusing the body, it is important to choose music that is not distracting or raise energy levels. Loud music is not ideal as is music with a strong drum and/or bass beat. Choose music that is purely instrumental and quiet. Many practicers of yoga also enjoy listening to music that is accompanied by nature sounds, like a gentle waterfall or birds chirping.

Relaxing music is very akin to the type of music you would use in the practice of yoga. Anything that is loud, jarring and containing a strong beat is not preferable. Choose music that is instrumental - without lyrics - so as to not distract or preoccupy your mind. Again, music by Enya or somebody similar is ideal.

It can be argued that all music is healing music, but some health gurus and alternative medicine experts claim that certain genres and styles of music, such as those listed above, are especially beneficial.

Music is all around us. Radio, TV, internet, ipods. Offices have music piped in to keep employees moral up and spirits high. Poeple cannot live without music because it keeps you emotionally healthy and it provides an escape at the end of the day. Even children benefit from music early in life. No matter what, make sure that music is around and a part of anything you are doing.
