Reetone: Does The Reebok Easytone Actually Work?

Posted on Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 at 11:17 am

Major sports brand Reebok have claimed that their new line of Easytone trainers can tone your hamstrings, calves and bum nearly 30% more than regular trainers just by walking in them. They claim the trainers can “train muscles your trainers never knew you had.”

The concept seems too good to be true; you exercise the same amount or simply walk around and your legs and behind get a workout that would usually take hours a day at the gym. But is this all just some marketing campaign or do they actually work? A team of scientists with expertise in exercise, sport and physiology at the University of Wisconsin conducted a study to test the claims on each of the shoes.

Heading up the test was John Porcari PhD who agrees that in theory the trainers should work the muscles harder because it creates instability that the body attempts to counteract. The shoes are based on a curved sole which creates an unstable surface which forces the wearer’s body to constantly struggle to find equilibrium.

The Reetone range was tested on a group of females aged 19 to 24. The subjects were put through exercise trials and had muscle activation, heart rate and caloric expenditure measured.

The trails were also conducted with a group aged 21 to 27 and both groups were tested with regular trainers to compare. The first results were not impressive, using the Reetone trainers did not increase caloric expenditure or heart rate and only produced aching of the muscles.

However, the team surveyed users of the shoes over a period of several months and found that the general consensus was an overall toning of the legs and bum. The team struggled to determine whether the toning was entirely due to imbalance or motivation to walk more.

The Reebok Easytone campaign has promoted the Easytone trainers by emphasising the positive effects on the toning and shaping of women’s legs and bums.

Skateboarding And Cheap Skate Shoes

Posted on Friday, July 2nd, 2010 at 12:51 pm

Tony Hawk, even as a kid, had overflowing source of energy that made him uneasy and unable to concentrate on a single task at one time. In simpler terms, he may be considered a headache. His parents realized soon enough that this is no ordinary case of a kid that is simply unruly.

His parents brought him to a psychologist and they discovered that he was a gifted kid. At 8, he had the brains of a 12-year-old. They continuously searched for things for him to do as an outlet. This older brother, Steve, learned of skateboarding and started skating himself. It wasn’t long until Tony got into it and found it very interesting.

These skateboarders became so popular they were almost celebrities. The underground skating culture was gaining momentum. Fans started dressing up like these skateboarders. The skateboarders developed an edgy image and identified themselves with punk musicians that were critical of the government and society.

In 1972, the urethane skateboard wheels were invented by the company called Cadillac wheels. This made skateboarding very safe and it also re-launched the sport. Figures like Tony Alva, Jay Adams and Stacy Peralta become popular when they started riding the board very much closer to how it is being ridden today. It was suddenly edgy, cool and still dangerous.

In 1978, Alan Gelfand gave birth to what was to become the father of all skateboarding maneuver called Ollie. This involves slamming his back foot down on the tail of his board and jump. This would launch himself and the board into the air. Ollie is Alan’s nickname. He just immortalized his memory. Despite this, new apprehension on the sport arouse when insurance companies refuse to insure skateboarders. This also discouraged the government from building skateparks. Skateboarders then started building their own ramps in their own backyard.

However, it also had its benefits such as the media paying more attention to them and companies started tapping skateboarders for more endorsements and looking at skateboarding as a legitimate culture they need to serve. New products were being developed for skateboarders that include the board itself, shoes, and clothes. New celebrities were also being created.
