Getting The Most Out Of In-Home Treadmills

Posted on Thursday, December 29th, 2011 at 5:06 pm

Exercise equipment is one of those things that gets purchased with the best of intentions, and then is forgotten after just a few months. Most people who own treadmills use them as clothes racks, or have them folded up in the back of the garage for their once-yearly foray into getting into shape. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Put exercise into your schedule. Decide what times work best for you, and then stick with them. If you plan to just exercise whenever you have time, you will likely find that you never do. Excuses don’t work as well when you find yourself at the start of a half-hour dedicated to exercise, and making something part of your routine makes it become habit more quickly.

A lot of people don’t like to exercise because it’s boring. One of the ways to distract yourself from both the boredom and the physical exertion is to put the treadmill in front of the TV. Television becomes positively healthy if you only watch it while walking or jogging. If you are the only person to use the television, you can even remove anywhere else to sit or perch from in front of it, to encourage using the treadmill.

Music can help keep you upbeat and maintaining energy for your exercise program. Boredom-killers include books on tape and reading actual books, for walkers (they don’t work so well when jogging). These can be found at your local library in many cases, which reduces the costs that might otherwise be associated with them.

Rewards systems work well for some people, though others don’t find them as useful. Generally, it is worth it to give them a try, however. The idea is to promise yourself some kind of reward (hopefully not food or laziness-related) that you purchase only after completing a set number of hours, days, or other measurement of exercising.

Use peer pressure to your advantage. Tell everyone you know (especially those you see regularly) about starting a new exercise plan. That way, you will know that people are going to ask you about your regimen, and you won’t want to have to disappoint yourself by admitting you’ve been slacking off.

Set a goal, such as participating in a 5K walk or run in six months. Register as far ahead of time as possible, and get someone you know to register too. This way, you will have something to work towards, and you will have someone counting on you to be ready. It’s even better if the walk is a benefit for something, so you can feel good about participating and helping raise money.

Just being aware that most treadmills wind up being used as coat racks is a good step towards not letting yours become one of them. But it takes more than just the knowledge of the potential problem, to avoid it. Keep track of your exercise sessions, and try to use rewards and scheduling to make exercise a habit and a beneficial presence in your life.

Power Plate Brings Whole Body Vibration To Exercise Programs

Posted on Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 at 8:00 pm

Power Plate adds whole body vibration to workout programs, providing improved muscle tone without requiring cardiovascular training or weight lifting. For people with many body types and ability levels, these machines may produce significant physiological benefits in just a few minutes per day. Machines are available in many fitness centers and may also be purchased for home use.

Whole body vibration came about through the space program. The vibration program was originally used to build muscle tone and bone density in Russian cosmonauts. Then, the idea spread quickly throughout Japan, Europe and the United States. In some locations, people have built entire centers devoted to this type of workout.

Vibration may have many physiological benefits for exercisers. Muscles will demonstrate better strength, flexibility and circulation along with better post-workout recovery. Also, vibration platforms may increase both core strength and metabolism. Many people who use vibration platforms experience increases in bone density. In addition, working out on the platform may improve lymphatic flow, reduce cortisol levels and elevate human growth hormone in the body.

Studies have verified certain benefits provided by vibration machines. The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research noted a significant increase in the hip bone density of postmenopausal women who used Power Plate for 30 minutes, three times per week. Another study published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society showed that seniors who could not participate in other forms of exercise enjoyed increased speed of movement and muscle strength after participating in a vibration program.

Vibration may also have some weight loss and toning benefits. According to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a research study placed mice on a vibrating platform five days per week for 15 minutes per session. These mice demonstrated significantly smaller torso size after using the platform for 15 weeks. These results came about even though the mice on the platform ate the same diet as the control group.

Whole body vibration works by stimulating the muscles, even when the exerciser is standing still. The body naturally responds to vibration by contracting muscles between 25 and 50 times per minute. The contractions work in three directions: side-to-side, back-and-forth and vertically. The result is a major increase in strength and power, which benefits exercisers ranging from accomplished athletes to seniors rehabilitating from a stroke.

One whole body vibration machine, Power Plate, provides vibration in intermittent bursts. During these intervals, people may perform dynamic exercises, or they may simply stand on the platform with knees bent. Standing with knees bent provides conditioning for the body’s core, but performing dynamic exercise while on the machine will add a new dimension to any established workout.

Many fitness centers and gyms feature whole body vibration machines, and many manufacturers sell smaller models for use in the home. For athletes looking for a new dimension to their workouts or for people with mobility limitations, vibrating platforms like Power Plate will provide a workout boost. People should seek the advice of a fitness professional when first using the machine and should discuss the benefits of this program with their doctor.
