Yoga Lessons Keep You Injury Free
Posted on Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 at 8:52 pmThere are many reasons for wanting to take yoga lessons. Relief from stress is a very common reason. They can also help improve your general health as well as help you to rehabilitate from injury, especially to the back. There are many different types of yoga classes from which to choose.
Hatha yoga is one of the oldest style of yogas and most of the others are based on it. This style of yoga is very gentle. It focuses on holding positions and incorporates the use of proper breathing. This is one of the best styles for both relaxation and rehabilitation. There are asanas or poses that can help your internal organs as well and boost your immunity. Sivananda yoga is a popular derivative of Hatha yoga.
Bikram yoga is another common style. These classes are held in a hot room, from 85 to as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat makes the muscles warmer and therefore easier to stretch. Another goal of this style is cleansing. If you take this style, be sure to keep yourself drinking water as you can become dehydrated due to the heat.
Power yoga is a newer creation and more of an obvious workout than the other two. For someone who has a hard time slowing down and breathing as in the Hatha yoga class, this can be a good way to at least begin practicing yoga. It is based on Ashtanga yoga and is more physically challenging and performed at a faster pace.
If possible, it is a good idea to get professional training, whichever style you decide to start studying. Yoga is a more gentle exercise than many but it is still possible to injure yourself in the beginning if you do not know how to perform the poses properly. Try to keep yourself from competing with others in your class. Do what feels right for your body on each individual day. An instructor that is good will keep motivating you but not make you do more than you are able.
Yoga is especially beneficial when practiced early in the morning or later in the evening. First thing, it helps you to set a relaxed tone for the rest of your day. Later, it can help you shake off the stress of your day and improve your sleep.
Actually, if you can do some yoga in both the morning and the evening, even better. In the morning, it also helps to stretch your muscles after being sedentary all night. In the evening, it gives them one last good stretch before being sedentary. Stretching in the morning and the evening helps to remove muscle tension and avoid injury.
Whichever yoga style you choose, it will benefit you. As with any type of exercise, what is most important is that you find a style that appeals to you and get started with it. The teacher is also important as the right one can keep you motivated to attend class and thus establish a consistent practice.
The idea of taking yoga lessons or yoga class is appealing to many individuals for many reasons. Being beneficial for anxiety relief is one of the most common reasons.
